Determination of the Specific Activity of Radionuclides in Environmental Objects by γ Radiometry of Samples

Atomic Energy Aims and scope

Abstract

The method proposed in this paper is intended to expand the possibilities of radiation monitoring of environmental objects by γ radiometry of samples. The method can be used for various geometries for performing measurements of the γ-ray dose rate of a sample and different radionuclide compositions in a sample. The γ-radiometry coefficient is determined on a representative sample of an environmental object, in which the composition of radionuclides and their activity ratio are determined by spectrometric and radiochemical analyses. γ radiometry on specimens of a representative sample and KCl salt in a convenient geometry is used. This makes a β-radiometric setup unnecessary in determining the γ-radiometry coefficient. In practice, this method makes it possible to decrease substantially the cost of radiation monitoring of environmental objects while increasing the volume and acquisition rate of information on the radiation conditions.
