On the Origin of Relic Magnetic Fields of Solar-Type Stars

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics Aims and scope

Abstract

We study a scenario in which the relic magnetic field of the Sun was generated by a hydromagnetic dynamo realized at the early stage of the solar evolution. Then this field was captured by the growing radiative core in that epoch. A quantitative model for this process is proposed. According to the model calculations, the magnetic field in the radiative core is essentially nonaxisymmetric and has a magnitude of about a few tenths of a gauss. We propose an interpretation for the phenomenon of active longitudes based on the existence of a nonaxisymmetric relic magnetic field.
