Localization of a Tremor Generator

Abstract

The characteristics of a tremor at rest in the left and right wrist joints were studied in 24 patients with Parkinson's disease using “soft” sensors, which insignificantly hampered the joint movements, and “rigid” sensors, which rigidly fixed the joint, thus approximating the experimental conditions to isometric. The fixation of the wrist joint appeared to decrease the amplitude of the tremor not only in this joint but also in the contralateral unfixed joint. Changes in the tremor frequency also occurred, but they were not so markedly pronounced. The nature of the tremor generators and their localization are discussed.
