Blood Counts with Determination of Lymphocyte Subpopulations: Possible Errors of Interpretation

Abstract

At present there is an imperative need to introduce in medicine the total blood count extended by supplementing the leukogram with the determination of lymphocyte subpopulations to follow the appearance and course of various infectious and noninfectious inflammatory diseases. Clinicians must be taught to interpret these parameters based on general physiological concepts. This article considers erroneous approaches which have recently been published by some immunologists; it is necessary to prevent the perversion of the physiological principles of the interpretation of the total blood count in inflammations by these approaches.
