Optimisation of Mechanisms with Collisions and Unilateral Constraints

Abstract

This paper addresses the optimisation of the transient dynamical behaviour of mechanisms. The reduction of such optimisation problems to a non-linear programming problem is described. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis serving as a link between simulation and general purpose optimisation codes is discussed. A method of sensitivity analysis is extended to mechanisms in which collisions can occur and the resulting equations are presented for a redundant description of multibody systems. Finally, the theory is applied to the optimisation of the geometry of a circuit breaker and the improvement of the system is experimentally evaluated.
