Abstract

The effect of stress management group therapy on a broad range of psychiatric symptoms was evaluated on an adolescent psychiatric unit. Adolescent boys and girls from ages 11 to 18 were placed in either an experimental group or a control group. The experimental group received three session of stress management group therapy in addition to the usual treatment on the unit, while the control group received only the usual treatment on the unit. Both groups were evaluated with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) before and after the stress management groups. Although both the experimental and the control groups improved their BPRS scores over the time of treatment, the experimental group showed a significantly greater improvement than the control group. The results indicate the stress management group therapy may be effective in reducing a broad range of psychiatric symptoms.
