Abstract

A Pd–Rh mixed metal catalytic system was developed that is able to hydrogenate 4-(phosphonomethyl)-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid to give 4-(phosphonomethyl)-2-piperidinecarboxylic acid with a cis selectivity of up to 98% with acceptable reaction time and without leading to metal contamination of the product.
