What Cytogenetic Studies May Tell Us about Species Diversity and Speciation of Lemurs

Abstract

I discuss the contribution of cytogenetic data to studies of systematics, phylogeny and speciation of several nocturnal lemurs. I examine specific distribution in Avahi and Lepilemur and propose a chromosomal mechanism involved in speciation of these two genera. I compare the contribution of cytogenetics to that of other techniques such as mitochondrial DNA sequencing. In rare situations wherein the respective systematic conclusions are contradictory, cytogenetic evidence clearly appears to be better supported.
