Abstract

The hygroscopicity of aerosol particles emitted by two different diesel powered vehicles, has been studied using a tandem differential mobility analyzer (TDMA). No appreciable growth of particles from either vehicle was observed at a relative humidity greater than 99%. Depending upon the operating speeds of the engines, the number median diameter of the particles ranged from 58 to 94 nm, the smaller values corresponding to higher speeds. The soluble fraction of the aprticles was approximately 15%.
