Pulses of Solar Activity and Related Photospheric Latitudes

Abstract

The data regarding the sunspots observed at Catania Astrophysical Observatory during the solar cycles 20, 21, and 22 have been used, with the aim of getting a more accurate description of the spot distribution and of its cycle-related variations. The following conclusions may be drawn: the activity cycle is articulated in several pulses, which are irregularly variable both in number and intensity from cycle to cycle; the photospheric sites, giving rise to such activity outbursts, are located – at least in many cases – on the poleward side of the pre-existing spot baricentric latitude, so as to produce a significant poleward displacement of that latitude.
