Abstract
Calculation of the scattering cross section per unit volume of auroral irregularities requires comprehensive knowledge of the law describing the formation of irregularities at both linear and nonlinear stages. In this paper, we calculate the scattering cross section using a simple idealized nonlinear model proposed by St.-Maurice and Schlegel. It is shown that the theoretical dependence of the scattering cross section per unit volume on the radar frequency calculated in terms of this model is in good agreement with the experimental curve.
