Abstract

The article explores the use of autobiographical discourse to produce a narrative capable of formulating a national identity. It discusses the different strategies used by the main character of each novel to reach a cultural identity for them and their people in a social context alien to their reality, their search for a cultural identity in the midst of a disintegrating tradition, and the historical silences imposed by mainstream culture over Latino socieites in the United States.
