Abstract

Multilayers of Ce/Fe and U/Fe were fabricated by sputtering and studied by X-ray diffraction and reflectivity, Mössbauer spectroscopy and polarised neutron reflectivity. Orientation of the magnetic moments of Fe layers out of the layer plane was observed for Ce/Fe multilayers with Fe layer thickness <17 Å. Analysis of a series of multilayers gave a large magnetic anisotropy of (0.98±0.15) mJm−2 for the Ce/Fe interface. No magnetic moments were detected on Ce or U layers.
