Abstract
This essay locates Judith Butler's Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity with respect to the historical moment of its publication in 1990 and its influence on the evolution of gender studies and queer theory in the 1990s. It also discusses Butler's place in feminism and feminist theory, and interrogates the relationship between popular culture, activism, and work in the academy.
