Reliability and Accuracy in Determining Metabolite Concentrations in Brain Tissue by in Vivo NMR Spectrometry

Abstract

The paper examines the possible sources of error in the NMR determination of the concentration of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) in the brain white matter. Software has been written to minimize the systematic errors and determine the NAA concentration with an error of less than 3%. In two males of ages 19 and 60, the NAA concentrations in the white matter were respectively 11.0 ± 2.3% and 10.6 ± 1.0% mmol/liter, while the myoinositol concentrations were respectively 4.03 ± 4% and 9.03 ± 4.2% mmol/liter.
