  • Matthew Nickerson

Ever since the card catalog gave way to the on-linepublic access catalog (OPAC) archivists and specialcollections librarians have longed to provide theirpatrons with the same level of computer searchingpower enjoyed by users of library main collections. In 1997 the Library of Congress announced thedevelopment of a new system designed to do just that:the Encoded Archival Description (EAD). The SpecialCollections at Southern Utah University's Gerald R.Sherratt Library adopted the new standard and used abasic wordprocessor, free open source software andin-house programming to create an efficient coding, search and display system for our photograph andmanuscript collections.
