Combining Ability of Resistance to the Sorghum Shootfly, Atherigona Soccata and Stemborer Chilo Partellus in Grain Sorghum, Sorghum Bicolor

Abstract

Combining ability of resistance to the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata and spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus in grain sorghum was analysed on a seven-parents diallel in a field trial at the ICIPE Mbita Point Field Station, western Kenya during the 1990 long rainy season. Lines with best performance for each of the four measured resistance parameters were also found to be the best general combiners. Resistance to leaf damage and number of holes/metre were controlled by additive gene effects whereas resistance to deadheart and stem tunnelling were controlled by additive and non-additive gene effects. Parents IS-1044, IS-12308 and IS-2269 with their good level of resistance, and desirable general combining ability (GCA) effects are proposed for utilisation as resistant combiners in breeding programmes for shootfly and stemborer resistance in grain sorghum.

Résumé

L’aptitude du sorgho à combiner la résistance à la mouche de pousses, Atherigona soccata et au foreur de tiges, Chilo partellus a été évaluée sur un descendant diallèle issu de sept parents, à la Station de Recherche de l’ICIPE de Mbita Point, à l’oeust du Kenya, au cours de la grande saison de pluies 1990. Les lignées avec une meilleure performance pour chacun des quatre paramètres mesurés pour la résistance étaient aussi les meilleures à combiner les deux types de résistance recherchée. La lésion foliaire et le nombre de trous par mètre étaient contrôlés par des effets additifs des gènes tandis que la résistance à la pourriture du coeur et la trouaison de tige étaient réglés par des effets additifs et non-additifs des gènes. Les parents IS-1044, IS-12308 et IS-2269, caractérisés par leur bon niveau de résistance et leur aptitude à combiner les deux types de résistance, ont été proposés dans le programme de sélection pour la résistance à la mouche des pousses et au foreur de tiges du sorgho.
