The Susceptibility of Varieties of Bambarra Groundnuts to Infestation by Callosobruchus Subinnotatus (PIC) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) During Storage

Abstract

Twenty-one varieties of bambarra cultivated in Nigeria were compared with respect to their susceptibility to Callosobruchus subinnotatus (Pic). The bruchids developed fastest on varieties TVSU 155 and TVSU 702. Development from the middle of oviposition to the emergence of the first filial adults lasted 32.8 and 32.0 days, respectively. Development was slowest on TVSU 1033, lasting 42.6 days. The highest number of first filia (F1) adults emerged from varieties TVSU ll.TVSU 702 and TVSU 1231, while the lowest number emerged from TVSU 688. Susceptibility indices calculated for the varieties showed that TVSU 702 was the most susceptible variety, while TVSU 346 and TVSU 1033 were the least susceptible varieties. Losses associated with varietal infestation, assessed in terms of weight of bambarra consumed by the bruchids were high for highly susceptible varieties and low for the least susceptible ones.

Résumé

Nous venons de comparer 21 variétés de bambarra cultivées au Nigeria vis-à-vis de leur sensibilité à Callosobruchus subinnotatus (Pic). Les bruchides ont développé beaucoup plus rapidement a sur les variétés TVSU 115 et TVSU 702 et le développement à partir du milieu de l’oviposition à l’apparition des premiers adultes filiaux ont duré 32.8 et 32.0 jours respectivement. Le développement était le plus lent sur TVSU 1033 qui a duré 42.6 jours.

Le numéro le plus élevé des premiers adultes filiaux (F1) a émergé des variétés TVSU 11, TVSU 702 et TVSU 1231 tandis que le numéro le plus bas a émergé de TVSU 688. Les indices de susceptibilité calculés à partir de ces variétés ont indiqué que TVSU 702 était la variété le plus susceptible tandis que TVSU 346 et TVSU 1033 étaient les variétés les moins susceptibles.

Les pertes associées à (‘infestation de ces variétés du point de vue du poids de bambarra consommées par les bruchides au cours de leur développement étaient élevées pour les variétés les plus susceptibles et moindre pour les variétés les moins susceptibles.
