Reduction of Ephestia Cautella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Infestation Rate of Stored Dates by Releasing Cytoplasmically Incompatible Males

Abstract

The use of incompatible males (IM) of (A) mating type to suppress the Iraqi (B) strain of Ephestia cautella, when the release ratio was 80:1:1 (A males: B males: B females, respectively), brought about a highly successful protection of uncovered loose dates against infestation with (B) strain in a simulated date store. Surprisingly the protection effect of IMs lasted for 230 days which commercially covers almost the whole period of date storage.

Since strain A males are believed to compete poorly against wild strain B males, the competitiveness of F1 males was measured in order to determine if they might be promising candidates for subsequent trials of the control of E. cautella by the release of incompatible males.

Résumé

On a utilise des mâles incompatibles (MI) de type (A) à l’union pour supprimer la race Irakienne (B) Ephestia cautella, dans un endroit identique à celle a d’éntrepôt de datte en utilisant la proportion de 80:1:1 (A mâles: B mâles: B femelles repectivement). Ils ont provoqués haut succès de protection de datte découverte contre l’infestation de la race (B). De plus, l’effet de la protection (MI) a duré 230 jours, ce qui covert toute la periode commercial du résérve de datte dans l’entrepot. Puisque, les mâles race A out estimé à faible compétiteur enface de mâles race B sauvage la competitivite des mâles (FM1) ont mesurés à l’ordre du determine sils peut-être le promesse candidateur pour l’subsequent d’essai contrôle E. cautella en realizant de mâles incompatible.
