Persistence of Insecticide Spray Deposits on Different Surfaces Against Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and sitophilus Zeamais (Motsch.)

Abstract

The biological activity of pirimiphos-methyl (20% e.c.) and a chlorpyriphos-methyl/deltamethrin (20/1% e.c.) formulation applied at different concentrations to glass, jute, plywood and mud surfaees against Prostephanus truncates (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.), was compared over a period of 18 weeks. The bioassays were conducted at 28°C and 70% r.h., 1, 4, 7, 14 and 18 weeks after treatment. Insect mortality was significantly influenced by the type of surface, the insecticide concentration, the age of the insecticide deposit and the interactions between these factors. P. truncates was more susceptible to chlorpyriphos-methyl/deltamethrin deposits than S. zeamais. Amongst the different surfaces, glass retained the highest persistence, followed by jute, plywood and mud against P. truncatus. The insecticide deposits on jute were the most effective in controlling S. zeamais.

Résumé

L’activité biologique de pirimiphos-methyl (20% e.c.) et de chlorpyriphos-methyl/deltametrin (20/1 % e.c), appliqués différentes concentrations sur des surfaces de verre, de jute, de triplex et de plaque boue désédiée contre Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) et Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch) fut comparée sur une période de 18 semaines, à 28°C, humidité relative 70%. Le type de surface, la concentration d’insecticide, l’âge du dépôt d’insecticide ainsi que les interactions entre ces facteurs ont une influence significative sur la mortalité des insectes. P. truncatus fut plus susceptible au dépôts de chlorpyriphos-methyl/deltamethrin que S. zeamais. Parmi les différentes surfaces, le verre a démontré la plus grande persistance contre P. truncatus, suivi de la jute, du triplex et de 1 plaque de boue. Les dépots d’insecticides sur la jute furent les plus efficaces pour le contrôle de S. zeamais.
