Naturally Acquired Immunity as an Element in Strategies for the Control of Ticks on Livestock

Abstract

Risk-benefit considerations have stimulated efforts to develop technology to overcome the limitations of procedures that place excessive reliance on the use of acaricides for the control of ticks affecting cattle. One of the alternatives to acaricides is the selection and use of breeds of cattle with a natural propensity for developing acquired resistance to ticks. The literature on aspects of the modes of expression and mechanisms of resistance of cattle to ticks, is reviewed along with information on the successful efforts in Australia to develop productive Bos indicus × Bos taurus breeds with the ability to develop high levels of resistance. The use of cattle resistant to ticks is discussed in relation to other factors that should be considered in the design of a programme for tick control.

Résumé

Les considérations des risques et des avantages ont commencé les efforts pour développer une technologie qui surmonterait les restrictions des procédures qui comptent trop sur l’utilisation des acaricides pour contrôler les coutils qui affectent le bétail. Une autre alternative au lieu des acaricides est la sélection et l’utilisation d’un élevage de bétail qui a une inclination naturelle pour développer une résistance acquise contre les coutils. La littérature actuelle est analysée à propos des aspects et des modes d’expression et des mécanismes de résistance du bétail contre les coutils. Il y a aussi une analyse de l’information à propos des efforts qui ont eu du succès en Australie pour développer les élévages Bos indicus × Bos taurus. Ces élévages sont très productifs et possèdent la capacité de développer une grande résistance contre les coutils. On discute l’utilisation du bétail qui résiste les coutils à propos des autres facteurs qui sont importants et qui mèritent considération en développant une programme de contrôle contre les coutils.
