Abstract

The tradition of Japanese Kampo Medicine provides complementary therapeutic options for different clinical features of acute and chronic bronchitis, which are attractive and suitable for practical use. In this herbal therapy report, three known and scientifically well studied prescriptions will be introduced: bakumondoto, with the main effect of moisturizing dry skin and mucosa is symptomatically used for dry cough and cough triggered by bronchial hyperreagibility. seihaito, on the contrary, will soothe and regenerate the irritated bronchial mucosa and reduce excessive phlegm.

saibokuto is indicated in cough and psychological strain, and asthma, in particular in patients showing Kampo specific abdominal findings. Besides the symptomatic efficacy, the positive constitutional aspects of all prescriptions may be considered in regard of a holistic therapy.
