Abstract
Following the meta-analysis by Tough et al. (2009), a number of papers have been published on the topic. There is still remarkable inhomogeneity with respect to case numbers, quality, and kind of treatment; making any estimation of scientific evidence an unrealistic endeavor. However, all works noted an improvement of complaints as seen by ante-post-comparison, a fact which speaks for itself. In seven out of ten randomized and controlled studies (RCTs), verum acupuncture significantly exeeded sham acupuncture. In 14 RCTs acupuncture was superior to control therapy. Regarding effectivity, acupuncture compared to another (not sham) therapy in nine studies.
