It was with great sadness that we learned that Professor Edwin R. Hancock passed away on 19th January 2024. Professor Hancock was a distinguished scientist and a prominent member of our academic community, receiving numerous awards and honours throughout his career. He was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was also honoured with the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award. Professor Hancock was an Associate Editor-in-Chief of the journal Visual Intelligence.

Professor Hancock has made significant contributions to computer vision, statistical and structural pattern recognition, machine learning and complex networks. His pioneering research in graph-based pattern recognition has helped shape and define the field since the 1990s.

He was an exceptional teacher and a highly effective supervisor for around 50 PhD students, now scattered around the world. His dedication to scientific research served as a source of inspiration for his students and subsequent generations of researchers who have emulated his example and made significant contributions to the field.

He demonstrated a deep commitment to science and a strong commitment to the academic community, fulfilling various roles in support of scientific research and publication. When the journal Visual Intelligence was founded in 2022, he was delighted to serve as an Associate Editor-in-Chief. Drawing on his extensive experience in publishing prestigious academic journals, he played a pivotal role in the launch of the journal.

As a teacher, mentor, colleague, friend, and co-founder of the journal Visual Intelligence, Professor Hancock will be dearly missed by the community he created with kindness, humility, and brilliance.
