Abstract
Button battery ingestions in the pediatric age group is a cause of serious concerns especially if the battery is impacted in the esophagus. Retrieval of esophageal impacted button batteries are performed as emergency procedures to minimize the morbidities or lethal outcomes. Button batteries that are impacted in the mid or lower esophagus can be reached through flexible or rigid endoscopes for retrieval, however, impacted batteries just below the upper esophageal sphincter pose a challenge as they do not permit the entry of the scope for optimal visualization and to perform any instrument maneuver due to space constraints. The retrieval of a button battery 2 cm in diameter in a 17-month-old toddler impacted just below the upper esophageal sphincter using a video laryngoscope to optimize visualization and suction tube retraction to expose the battery for successful grasper retrieval is presented.
