Characterization of pathogens associated with the wilt complex of chickpea in Gujarat, India

Abstract

Soil-borne diseases caused by a complex of various soil fungi are one of the constraints for the production of chickpea in Gujarat, India. The identification and determination regarding the distribution of these fungi in those areas will define the risk of damage to the crop. The disease was mapped and samples were collected from chickpea-growing pockets of Gujarat viz., Anand, Kheda, Dahod and Panchmahal districts, Bhal and Ghed regions during the 2018–19 rabi season. The disease was widespread at all the surveyed locations and the disease incidence varied from 1.80 to 52.55% thereby indicating the importance of the problem. Based on cultural characteristics, morphology and sequence analysis of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and TEF-1α gene, the pathogens associated with the wilt complex of chickpea were identified as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, Fusarium solani and Macrophomina phaseolina.
