Pigeonpea Sterility Mosaic Virus: a threatening virus of pigeonpea, current scenario and its control

Abstract

Sterility mosaic disease (SMD) aptly known as ‘green plague’ in pigeonpea production, is an evolving disease in India. Pigeonpea Sterility Mosaic Virus (PPSMV) causing SMD belonging to the newly established genus Emaravirus, containing multipartite and negatively oriented single-stranded RNA genomes. The PPSMV has two strains namely, PPSMV1 and PPSMV 2 found in Southern India. Annually, SMD is causing an estimated yield loss of US $300 million and above in India. The review encompasses various concepts of SMD viz., detection, characterization of the causal agent, epidemiology and management strategies including virus free seed material, cultural management, host plant resistance, and control of insect vector.
