Abstract
Strawberry anthracnose is a devastating disease for which effective fungicides are limited. Seven demethylation inhibitors (DMIs) were evaluated as mixtures or separately for their efficacy against the causal agent Colletotrichum spp. EC50 values of C. fioriniae, C. siamense, C. nymphaeae and C. lineola averaged 0.2, 0.3, 0.3, 0.8 µg/mL, and 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 1.4 µg/mL for propiconazole and difenoconazole, respectively. In contrast, EC50 values of these species were approximately tenfold higher for myclobutanil, flutriafol, triflumizole, and tetraconazole. Compared to propiconazole or difenoconazole, the sensitivity of C. fioriniae, C. siamense and C. nymphaeae to the new DMI fungicide mefentrifluconazole was lower in general, with EC50 values ranging from 0.1 to 1.8 µg/mL. The only C. lineola isolate examined seemed to be the least DMI-sensitive. Synergistic interactions were investigated with 15 combinations of DMIs for C. nymphaeae and C. siamense in vitro. No combination had a lower EC50 value than difenoconazole or propiconazole alone. Results from detached fruit assays were largely comparable with the EC50 values, and propiconazole outperformed other fungicides tested. These findings suggest that DMIs labeled for strawberries may lack synergistic effects in mixtures for C. nymphaeae, but propiconazole or difenoconazole may be useful for anthracnose management.
