Abstract
A lot of research has been done on how to make buildings stronger against lateral forces caused by earthquakes and wind. One way to do this is to use energy dissipation dampers and selective reinforcing to lessen the effects of earthquakes. This investigation introduces an innovative technique, Ground Cable Bracing (GCB), that stands apart by proposing a novel approach to reinforce the lateral response of medium to high-rise buildings. This technique is particularly relevant for buildings that have been constructed without adequate lateral strength, which can result in undesirable outcomes such as excessive lateral movement, reduced occupant comfort, and increased stresses within structural elements. In this study, steel building models with varying numbers of stories are analyzed using ETABS software. Static lateral loads are applied to assess lateral displacement, story drift, and changes in column stresses. Considerations are made for cable-related variables, including the optimal story for cable attachment and the anchoring distance from the building’s base. Crucially, the study verifies that the optimal story height for cable connection at 70% height proves most effective. Comparative analyses reveal substantial reductions in lateral sway, with 50%, 66%, and 72% for eight, twelve, and sixteen-story models, respectively.
