The Country Where My Heart Is is another excellent edited volume by Alasdair Brooks, who demonstrates his continued commitment to promoting historical archaeology. He is joined by Natascha Mehler who has associations with the German Maritime Museum, University of Vienna, and the University of the Highlands and Islands. Together they have edited a solid volume focused on the development of nationalism and national identity and the materiality of these phenomena in the postmedieval world. While much of the volume leans heavily toward the North Atlantic, the editors have included chapters on Turkey and Slovenia as well as Easter Island and the American Southwest. A chapter on ship archaeology balances the volume incredibly well. The volume authors hail from North and South America as well as the United Kingdom and Europe, providing a current, global perspective, with several chapters drawing attention to recent political and social challenges.
