Abstract
A series of experiments at the Institute for Plasma Research helped provide the first experimental evidence of the existence of precursor solitons ahead of a charged body traveling in a plasma with a supersonic speed. The experiments were done in a dusty plasma with the dust made to flow over an electrostatic potential barrier acting as a charged object. The experiments not only provided a detailed characterization of these nonlinear structures but also detected another class of driven solitons called pinned solitons. In this Special Topics review article we provide a consolidated account of these experimental findings and also the associated theoretical work that was carried out in their support.
