Abstract

The dove tree (Davidia involucrata Baill.) is a famous ornamental tree species. As a relic species from the Tertiary, it has strong resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. However, extensive curling leaves and necrosis have been observed in the dove trees distributed in the Badagong Mountain Nature Reserve since 2020. The symptom is caused by the parasitism of an insect surrounded by foam. The insect selectively parasitizes on the lower surface of the dove tree leaves, leading to leaf necrosis, thus threatens the survival of juvenile plants. Morphological characters of the insect indicated that it belongs to the Cercopidae family of Homoptera, and molecular markers identified it as Mesoptyelus nigrifrons. To our knowledge, this species, as well as other species of the Cercopidae family, has not been reported to live in areas above 700 m altitude. This is the first report of Mesoptyelus nigrifrons predominantly parasitizing the dove tree in China.
