Protecting the Environment from Marine Pollution in Bangladesh: A Brief in Legal Aspects with Response to National and International Cooperation’s

Abstract

The marine environment of Bangladesh is bestowed with numerous living resources, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, corals and aquatic plants including seaweed. Marine pollution is now a buzzword since pollution of the marine environment exerted devastating impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. Bangladesh has ratified most of the international conventions and laws regarding marine pollution, but the country has no national marine environmental protection policy of its own. Practical, sustainable, and environment-friendly actions can protect the marine environment of Bangladesh from possible pollution effects. Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Department of Shipping, Department of Environment, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Ports Authority, Bangladesh Navy, etc., are the entrusted national body to play a vital role in protecting the marine environment. UN, UNEP, IMO, ISA, GESAMP etc. are responsible international bodies for the active implementation of international treaties regarding marine pollution prevention. Both national and international stakeholders should play an essential role in the sustainable management of the world's ocean. For this, the article critically analyzed the national and international legislations for controlling marine pollution issues under a case study. The study finally concludes with requirement of a comprehensive ocean management approach for the Bay of Bengal since it is linked with the different neighboring countries. These approaches are prerequisites for the sustainable improvement of the ocean environment in Bangladesh by mitigating marine pollution under national, regional, or international cooperation.
