Abstract

Keggin-type H3−xMx[PW11CrO40]/SiO2 (M = Co or Fe) as heterogeneous catalysts were prepared by impregnation method. The prepared compounds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis (ICP-OES), and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of the compounds were measured by BET method. The results confirmed the presence of Keggin-type heteropolyacids structure in the prepared samples and showed that the obtained particles were in nanoscale. For studying the effect of combination of transition metals such as cobalt or iron with chromium-substituted heteropolyacid supported on silica, the catalytic activity of the compounds was evaluated in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde, as a test reaction, by 30% aqueous H2O2 without using any solvent. The influence of various reaction parameters was also investigated. The results showed that the H0.5Co1.25[PW11CrO40]/SiO2 catalyst had better selectivity to benzaldehyde (99%) than the H1.5Fe0.5[PW11CrO40]/SiO2 catalyst with 80%. Therefore, H0.5Co1.25[PW11CrO40]/SiO2 catalyst was recycled and reused in the reaction under optimized conditions. Comparison of the fresh and recycled catalyst after four tests indicated that the Keggin structure of the catalyst had not collapsed.
