Zowel in België als in Europa wordt het aantal personen ouder dan 65 jaar alsmaar groter. Recente cijfers geven aan dat ongeveer 20% van de totale populatie ouder is dan 65 jaar, wat in België neerkomt op ruim twee miljoen oudere personen.1
