Samenvatting
Hoewel een zeer prevalente aandoening, blijft urine-incontinentie vaak een ondergerapporteerd probleem. Slechts de helft tot een derde van de patiënten consulteert met dit probleem een arts. Cijfers uit het EMD van het wijkgezondheidscentrum De Sleep, een praktijk waarvan ongeveer de helft van de patiënten van Turkse origine is, toonden bij deze populatie een wel heel lage prevalentie aan. Het lage help-seeking behaviour (hulpzoekend gedrag) kan worden verklaard door de geringe ernst en hinder, maar tevens door de onwetendheid van de patiënt omtrent de oorzaken en behandelingen van urineverlies. De arts heeft hier de taak de patiënt te informeren en te betrekken in een gezamenlijke besluitvorming.
