Test Review of the Feifer Assessment of Mathematics (FAM)

Abstract

The Feifer Assessment of Mathematics (FAM; Feifer & Clark, 2016) is a comprehensive assessment of mathematics. The test is designed to examine the underlying neurodevelopmental processes that support the acquisition of math skills. A neuropsychological approach identifies multiple neural pathways which underscore various cognitive processes used in mathematical problem-solving. A neuropsychological approach to assessing mathematics incorporates attention, working memory, executive functioning, language, processing speed, and spatial ability. The FAM has 19 subtests that measure both the neuropsychological building blocks of math as well as math performance. The FAM measures math fact retrieval, numeric and spatial memory, perceptual estimation skills, linguistic math concepts, and core number sense development. This review explores the Feifer Assessment of Mathematics (FAM), and its contribution to the neuropsychological evaluation of mathematics.
