Abstract

Quality of life (QOL) is an emerging area of research for mental illnesses mirroring the recent surge of interest in patient reported outcome measures across a range of chronic illnesses in medicine. Given the nature of mental illnesses and the broad overarching concept of quality of life there are several issues related to the definition of the concept itself. There are unique challenges in measuring QOL for mental illnesses and the role of cultural factors also cannot be ignored. Psychiatric rehabilitation consists of a variety of interventions that target functional outcomes rather than control of symptoms alone. The recovery based approach of psychosocial rehabilitation in many ways is geared to individualizing care and ultimately improving quality of life.
