Abstract

Psychiatric disorders having onset during adolescence have potentially deleterious effects on educational outcomes. Their relationship however has been sparsely studied. This study aimed to understand educational difficulty among students who consulted a tertiary care neuropsychiatric institute in south India. We reviewed charts of students/unemployed patients aged between 16 and 25 years, who underwent detailed evaluation between May and June 2013 (n = 123). We examined their clinical and educational outcomes. Mean (±SD) age was 20.3 (2.4) years; 80 (65 %) were males. Mean (±SD) duration of illness was 35.6 (30.1) months. Overall, 52/123 (42.3 %) had discontinued their education. 47/52 (90.4 %) had discontinued after the illness onset. Discontinuation was eight times (Odds ratio = 8.4; p ≤ 0.05) more common among patients with schizophrenia than other disorders. Majority who continued education 66/123 (53.6 %) faced problems including concentration difficulties, decline in performance and breaks in schooling. 1-year follow-up information was available only for 39 patients. Among these, 2/18 (11 %) who had discontinued education at the time of evaluation had rejoined; 13/21(61.9 %) who had continued education did so with varying degrees of difficulties. Severe psychiatric disorders starting during adolescence seriously hamper educational attainment. This area requires urgent attention with prospective research involving culturally relevant management strategies.
