Abstract

This article is a review of Confucian Philosophy in a Comparative Age (比较的时代: 中西视野中的儒家哲学前沿问题, Beijing: Zhongguo Shehui Kexue Chubanshe, 2019) by Chenyang Li. The book compares the different cultural configurations of values in China and the West and explores the conceptual changes of Confucianism in the face of five challenges: science, democracy, feminism, environmentalism, and the survival of the Confucian tradition. Li discusses Confucian responses to these challenges by concentrating on the practical issues of Confucianism, which are situated in its transcendental heaven-earth-humanity triad, with a focus on the comparability between Confucian and Western ideas.
