Complicanze croniche del diabete: i due sessi a confronto

Sommario

Il numero di evidenze sulle differenze di genere nell’ambito del diabete e delle sue complicanze è in crescente aumento. Numerosi fattori, biologici, ambientali e psicosociali, sono potenzialmente coinvolti, ma i meccanismi fisiopatologici alla base sono ancora in parte sconosciuti. La comparsa del diabete sembrerebbe determinare una perdita dell’effetto protettivo degli estrogeni, predisponendo maggiormente il sesso femminile allo sviluppo di complicanze, soprattutto cardiovascolari.
