Direct medical costs included those for consultations, investigations and drugs; direct non-medical costs included those for transport, food, drink, accommodation and non-prescribed drugs; indirect costs were productivity time losses. Costs were measured in Ethiopian birr (exchange rate $US1 = 14 birr at the time of the study).
