Abstract

This paper presents a study on the influence of pre-pulse process by spot weld bonding of asymmetric three-sheet steel stack-ups. Two types of stack-ups were examined, consisting a combination of low carbon steel (DX51—1.0226) and ultra-high-strength steel (22MnB5—1.5528). Weld bonding of asymmetric stack-ups results in particular challenges. By using standard parameters, the effective welding current range is reduced. This is primarily due to the increased contact resistance caused by the adhesive application and the associated change in process behavior. The use of adjusted parameters has made it possible to increase process stability and thus the welding current range. The selected pre-pulse allows the conditioning of the adhesive-bonded stack-ups. In addition to the evaluation of the specific welding current ranges, investigations were also carried out using static resistance measurement and on-line measurement to evaluate the electrical energy during welding.
