Over 400 papers were submitted to Welding in the World in 2018. Of this number, 103 papers were recommended by IIW Working Units and ~300 papers were submitted via open submission. Approximately 20% of the open submission papers were approved by the Editorial Board and forwarded into the peer review system.

In 2018, the role of the Editorial Board was greatly expanded to assist with the pre-screening of open submission papers and to streamline the peer review process. Currently, there are over 35 members of the Editorial Board, as listed on the inside cover of this issue.

All the indicators of the journal’s quality and performance continued to increase significantly in 2018. The Impact Factor now stands at 1.206 and is expected to increase to ~1.4. It is projected that there will be ~82,000 paper downloads in 2018, an increase of 11% from 2017.

The Editors wish to thank all who contribute to the quality of the journal including authors, working unit chairs and co-chairs, principal reviewers and members of the review panel, the Editorial Board, the IIW managing editor and staff, and the support staff at Springer. The tremendous growth in the number of papers submitted to Welding in the World over the last four years has required tremendous effort by both the peer review panel and production staff.
