Abstract

The implementation of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices is still lagging in developing countries and it requires additional research attention. This research adopts the Pareto optimality principle to identify the key performance parameters for implementing GSCM practices in the Indian tea industry. Initially, twenty-eight important performance parameters are identified from an extant literature and verified by the experts. Next, data is collected through a questionnaire development, site visits, and structured interviews with the experts. Finally, results reveal that decrease in consumption of toxic materials, increase in operational cost, reduction in the cost of energy consumption by GSCM, and decrease in scarp rate are the four most critical performance parameters. The outcome of the Pareto analysis is validated using a scoring model. The novelty of this research lies in the consideration of environmental, economic, operational, and social aspects of sustainability for evaluating GSCM performance parameters. This research may help industry practitioners and managers make strategic decisions for improving GSCM performance and acquiring sustainability in the tea industry.
