Efficient coating system for small bulk parts in small batches

Walther Trowal has developed the Rotamaten R 60 for coating small batches of small bulk parts. The machine can process volumes between 2 and 15 litres, including metal parts with a high specific weight. Although it is designed for small batches, it has all the same functions as its larger equivalents. The drum has a diameter of 600 mm and is ideally suited for parts which would generate too much friction in larger drums, such as spikes for winter tyres, bullets and balancing weights. Tried-and-tested components from the large coating systems have been used in the new machine, such as the air supply and exhaust system, the explosion-proof LED lights inside the drum and the drum holder. The small machine also has a four-stage exhaust system with a cardboard labyrinth filter, filter mat and two bag filters. The temperature of the incoming air is measured shortly before it enters the drum, which allows it to be regulated more precisely. In order to reduce the energy consumption, the size of the heater has been adjusted to suit the smaller diameter drum. Depending on the properties of the parts and the paint, the machine is equipped with a PID controller or a synchronised controller for the heater. This makes it possible to use paints that must not exceed or fall below certain temperatures during the application process. The volume of incoming air is determined using a pilot tube, which enables the concentration of solvents to be calculated reliably. This means that the machine can be certified for a high solvent throughput.

Ultra-matt powder coatings

High-gloss coatings are gradually losing their popularity in the construction industry. Instead the demand for products with a low level of surface gloss is growing. AkzoNobel has launched its Précis range on the global market to meet the increasing demand for ultra-matt powder coatings. The Interpon D2015 Précis range has a very low gloss level and, according to the manufacturer, a high long-term resistance to weathering. The range is available in 12 shades, which include six metallic colours. These have been chosen to mimic the anodised surfaces that are widely used on commercial buildings. An additional advantage of the coatings is that they avoid the problems resulting from anodising, because they can be repaired, they are suitable not only for aluminium but also for other substrates and they have much better colour consistency across different components. One further benefit of these textured surfaces with an ultra-matt finish is that small faults and damage are less visible than on high gloss coatings. The Interpon D2015 Précis range is based on a technology with gloss levels between 7 and 15. The coatings are also soft and smooth to the touch and non-reflective. This makes them ideal for outdoor use at ground level, for example on street furniture and metalwork. They can also be used at higher levels on buildings where the lack of reflection makes the underlying colour more noticeable.

Heat- and UV-resistant masking tape

Colad Orange is a new orange-coloured marking tape that is highly resistant to heat and UV light. It has been specially developed for use by experts in the painting sector. The tape is highly adhesive and remains UV- and weather-resistant for up to eight days. It provides very sharp lines and leaves no residues after it has been removed, even following a processing period of one hour at up to 100°C. Colad Orange is suitable for all paint application systems and consists of a special combination of saturated semi-crepe paper and a rubber-based adhesive. It has a high level of initial tack and good adhesive properties, including on substances such as metal and rubber.
