Die Pneumonie gehört zu den am weitesten verbreiteten Infektionskrankheiten weltweit. In Deutschland sind die häufigsten Erreger der ambulant erworbenen Pneumonie (CAP) Pneumokokken. Problematisch ist diese Form der Pneumonie besonders aufgrund der hohen Pathogenität der Pneumokokken, auch wenn es sich meist nicht um eine invasive Erkrankung handelt. Daher ist bei Risikopersonen eine Impfung anzuraten.
