Anfälle im Neugeborenenalter sind häufige Notfallsituationen mit einem breiten Spektrum von Differenzialdiagnosen. Sie unterscheiden sich in ihren Zeichen/Symptomen deutlich von denen im späteren Säuglings- und Kleinkindalter. Oft können sie daher klinisch nur sehr schwer erkannt und zugeordnet werden. Die Dunkelziffer nicht erkannter Anfälle dürfte speziell bei Frühgeborenen recht groß sein.
