Der Schluckakt ist ein hochkomplexer Vorgang, der auf vielen Ebenen störanfällig ist. Schluckstörungen kommen besonders häufig im höheren Lebensalter vor. Zum einen nimmt die Inzidenz von Erkrankungen, die mit Dysphagie einhergehen, zu. Zum anderen ist das Schlucken aufgrund von altersphysiologischen Veränderungen weniger effizient.
