Die respiratorische Insuffizienz ist ein Charakteristikum von vielen schweren Erkrankungen, z. B. der COPD, sowie von medizinischen Notfällen. Ziel der inhalativen Sauerstofftherapie ist der Ausgleich einer Hypoxie. Die zugrunde liegende Erkrankung kann damit jedoch nicht therapiert werden.
